C-parts management Knowledge

The term C-parts is derived from the ABC analysis. This is a universal instrument for the separation of the substantial requirements of insignificant. It is particularly suitable for the analysis of quantity-value relations. The advantage of the method lies in the fact that accordingly classified material can be treated differently intensively, which leads to the optimization of procurement processes.

What are C-parts and what is an ABC analysis?

The ABC analysis classifies parts or goods according to the total commodity value. As a rule, the following picture emerges: A-parts make 60 to 80 per cent of the purchase value, represent however only 15 to 20 per cent of the entirety of the articles which can be procured (in terms of quantity). For B-parts, the share of the purchase value is only 10 to 25 percent, but the quantity share is 25 to 30 percent. Ergo, C-parts are items that account for only 5 to 15 percent of the value, but usually 70 to 90 percent of the total quantity.
To be economically successful in purchasing, it makes sense to distinguish A and B parts from C parts. Every company uses both A-parts and B-parts, which are expensive in terms of item value, and, as a rule, standardized C-parts, i.e. Goods with a low individual value for example in the following areas:

First, a material dispensing or staging system that can include thousands of small parts (for example, on bolts, nuts, washers, etc.) from hundreds of suppliers or brands. It is based on an automatic i.e. replenishment and orders, for example in the area of tools, fastening technology and occupational safety items, are are triggered automatically via RFID technology, for example, on the basis of C article withdrawals. Here, material replenishment is simply by automatic ordering. The systems are self-controlling. Concepts such as "predictive maintenance" also come into play.

In order to use C-parts directly where they are needed - such as in industrial production or maintenance - transportable or mobile magazines such as container systems are also used. This optimizes the procurement and storage of C-parts because the container becomes part of the in-house material supply. Assortments can always be adapted to demand. In production and assembly, Kanban systems are used as shelving systems and box systems:No searching, no long distances, because workers take all the small parts they need for a production step on the spot from the kanban system, which is always reliably filled because upstream systems ensure this.
